Macro Recorder :
What is a macro recorder? How to choose a macro recorder?

What is a macro recorder?

Macro recorder provide easy to use record macro and run macro capabilities. Using this you can simply record a task and re-play it at any time. Using a macro recorder is like using a video camera. Record and replay.

Macro recorder records keyboard and mouse actions. Because of that they are also called keyboard recorder or mouse recorder.

How to choose a macro recorder?

Below are few things to keep in mind when you are evaluating any macro recorders.

  1. How accurate is the macro recorder?
In other words, how well does it re-play the macro? Does your macro work if the position of the window is changed or there are a few minor changes in the system? Otherwise, every other day you will find yourself re-recording the macro.

  2. Easy to use
Do you find the macro recorder easy to use? Can you record and re-play the macro in minutes? Macro recorders are a great productivity tool. While you are working, if you realize there is repetitive aspect to your work, within minutes you should be able to create a macro and run it.

  3. Ability to wait till a web page is loaded (IE Plug-in)
If you plan to use macros for Internet activities, like logging into your web based account, generate web based reports, or play online games; does the macro recorder provide IE plug-in? Macro recorders with IE plug-in can wait till IE page is loaded. Without this feature your Internet macros will be erratic. They work once in a while, fail more often.

  4. Ability to run macros faster
Can you run macros faster? This feature comes very handy especially for long macros. Check if your macro recorder supports this feature. Few macro recorder programs provide features where you can specify how fast you want it to run. One thing to note is if you speed-up too much your macros may fail. What if someone asked you to speed-up your morning routine and get to office quickly. Alright, you can speed up but only to an extent, it still does take some time, right? The same goes for macros. If you are performing some task, it takes some time for a window to open, web pages to load, etc. So if you speed-up too much it will fail. After some tries you can figure out what speed works best for your system.

  5. Can you repeat you macros?
This is not always required, but many times you want to run the same macro a few times. You can always manually click it that many times, but more advanced macro recorders offer repeat options. Using this, you can set a repeat count for your macros.

  6. Ability to run macros that are file specific or global
Are macros file specific? Some programs do a title match, i.e. if you recorded a macro on file sample1.doc and now you want to run it on sample2.doc, it will not work. If this is important to you check if the macro program allows a less specific match option.
